I played in a great narrative-driven tournament this weekend: the Massacre at Istvaan V! There were a lot of fun and interesting things about this tournament:
- it was an all space marine tournament, with each player declaring his allegiance to the Emperor or Horus at the start of day 1. I, of course, was a loyalist. :D
- the tables were broken up into 3 zones - left flank, right flank and vanguard. The flanks played 1500pt games, the vanguard 1750pts
- each zone had different missions for each round and each faction having different objectives for the same mission (which were not shown to the opposing player until the end of the game)
- each mission scored objective points and kill points. Objective points counted towards your personal score, kill points towards your faction's score.

One of the best things of the tournament was the matching system. At the start of each round, an overhead went up showing the list of players for each side ordered by their total objective store (ie weakest players at the top). The organizers would then proceed through the list, giving the each player an opportunity to pick their opponents. The challenged opponent would then have the choice of table. It was a great system, which meant that friends and rivals were able to call each other out, while generally allowing players to choose to play against others of their performance level.

I've put some links at the bottom of this post if you'd like more information on the campaign.

Each player had to provide a name and background story for their army, which was then etched into a dogtag created by the organizers. These tags were used to track which players were on which tables, and were a great souvenir from the tourney. I wanted to play something completely different (and more fluffy, given the type of tournament), so I went with an all Death Company list. Since named characters weren't permitted, I had to pay an extra 66pts (determined by the judges) to purchase Astorath's ability to take multiple DC units.
- Reclusiarch (melta bombs, hand flamer)
- 15-man Death Company (thunder hammer, 2xpower weapon, land raider crusader w/multi-melta)
- 6-man Death Company (power fist, power weapon, 2xbolter, razorback w/heavy flamer)
- 6-man Death Company (power fist, power weapon, 2xbolter, razorback w/heavy bolter)
- 5-man Vanguard Vets (jump packs, thunder hammer, 2xpower weapon, 4xmelta bomb)
- Death Company Dread (Talons)
- Death Company Dread (Fists)

It is definitely a do or die list as it can't claim any objectives and has no long range shooting, but it has TONS of offensive power. 100% feel no pain while rerolling hits and wounds is just gross. :D

NOTE: I've tried to remember names and outline my opponent's list for each of the games, but at this point they're a blur. Don't be surprised if the army lists are a little vague or not pointed out exactly right. :D

Game 1 - vs Space Wolves
------------------------
I was challenged in Game 1 by the traitorous Shaun, my partner from last month's doubles tournament. He was playing an all-foot space wolf list:
- rune priest
- wolf priest
- battle leader in terminator armour with 2xClaws
- 4 10-man grey hunter squads
- 5-man biker squad
- lone wolf with TH/SS in terminator armour
- 2 long fangs, one with 2xML/2xPC, the other with 2xML/2xLas

This was an ambush mission, with each side deploying their army within 4" of each other at the center of the table (no reserves, deep strike, etc), and all infantry starting out of their vehicles - this was to represent us all hanging out as allies on parade. The traitors could infiltrate half their units, but could do nothing but shoot with those units first turn. Loyalists would then have to activate units on their first turn. Turns 2+ were as normal. Basically a blood bath waiting to happen. This really played to my strengths, as all my meaty assault units were right in his face.

He put most of his units in the center, brought in two grey hunters on his board edge as backup, and put a long fang back in each of my corners (nicely exposing all of my infantry who had been hiding behind their transports). He was able to vaporize one of my small DC squads with his initial barrage... and then he got swamped with DC as almost all my units activated successfully. While the DC ate his center and moved on his board edge, the land raider and vanguard vets turned and took out the long fang unit on my back left corner. By the end of the game, I'd destroyed everything except for long fang unit in my back right corner. Victory to me!

Fun game, and Shaun was a great opponent (especially given the pummelling he was taking).

Memorable Moment: Tank-shocking an untouched 10-man grey hunter unit with a weapon-destroyed razorback and driving them off the table. :D

Game 2 - vs Space Wolves
------------------------
I picked the table for this mission, and was joined by a Space Wolf player. This game was a 'kill the traitor' mission, with each player providing 2 infantry models to be moving (ie scattering) objectives. The objective was to be the player to hold the secret papers held by one of the traitor models. The traitors were evenly spaced across the center of the board and randomly scattered each player turn.

This was another bloody game. My opponent got first turn so (with some unfortunate traitor scatter) was able to capture/kill 3 of the 4 traitors to my 1. Also unfortunate was the fact that the last traitor captured (and the one to cough up the objective) was on my far left, well away from my center-right main force. I easily batted through his termie and grey hunter units in the center and swung my army left while my sole unit in the area (a small DC unit) held up his objective-holding grey hunters for 3 round of combat. He played it smart, however, and managed to keep the objective out of reach. A lucky land raider-killing shot on turn 5 that killed my last transport (and longest ranged weapons) gave him the win.

Another fun game, even though I lost on mission objectives. I got lots of kill points, however.

Memorable Moment: Taking 25-30ish wounds over a couple of turns from his Redeemer's flamestorm cannon and making all but one FNP save!

Game 3 - vs CSM
---------------
Adam and I were at about the same ranking, so we challenged each other. Adam was running a Khorne list with:
- 2 berzerker squads in rhinos
- 10-man raptor squad
- 3 obliterators
- daemon prince
- chaos lord with khorne daemon weapon
- 2 defilers w/close combat arms

Each player had an 18" deployment off of the narrow edge of the board, leaving a huge 3" gap for me to run through. While Adam was playing a largely-Khorne army, he had way more long ranged shooting so opted to wait and make me come to him. One razorback and most of the contained unit were wiped early on, but the rest of my infantry survived to get into combat. Berzerkers are a good match for DC, so I knew I needed to get the charge - however, when I failed to pop one squad's rhino I made the mistake of bailing out to assault in order to blow up the rhino and oblits (which I did - they died nicely). However, that left my large squad to get assaulted by both units of berzerkers, his lord and the daemon prince. While my other small DC squad eventually moved up to support, the damage was mostly done. Fortunately the slow-moving dreads managed to wipe the raptors and a rhino no the way in. End result: tie in objective points, despite the bloody mistakes I made.

Memorable Moment: At this point, the Horus-ites were at Desperation Level 1, which meant they could reroll saves vs shooting but had to Death or Glory vs tankshock. In the last turn, my land raider was able to shock a berzerker unit (killing the fist), the daemon prince (killing it) and the last berzerker from the second squad (killing him). Two kill points from a single tank shock! Sweet....

Game 4 - vs Space Marines
-------------------------
This was my single worst result... ever. I played against Jeff, who was a great opponent and helped keep things upbeat. This game had a standard 12" deployment, and almost all of the objectives were claiming-based (which I couldn't get as I had no scoring units). No worries, I'd gone into things knowing that I'd run into situations like this. Unfortunately this game all went wrong. My faction purchased an opening artillery barrage - I got the minimum number of templates and all but one scattered at least 10" (hitting nothing). The last managed to kill a scout. Two of my three transports were destroyed in my deployment zone. My vanguard squad (TH, 4xmelta bombs) dropped in and assaulted a vindicator twice and never got a hit. And the traitors purchased a Primarch for this round, which showed up mid-game and managed to put enough of a dent into my large DC unit that I wouldn't be able to kill anything with it (removing the opportunity to get that single non-claiming objective).

End result, I got zipped - no kill points, no objectives. The best I managed to do is get one scout squad down to one model due to repeated application my razorback's heavy flamer. Ouch. Don't get me wrong - Jeff played well and there was still some fun to be had... in fact, by the end it was so bad it was getting to be stupidly funny. :D

Memorable Moment: Having his primarch not achieve any kill points. In other games, a primarch would arrive and take out 2-3 KP (transport, unit and maybe attached HQ) but all he did in mine was eat about 8 death company models from a unit of 15. :D

Game 5 - vs Space Marines
-------------------------
With the last result dropping my standings, I was challenged early in the round selection by a young guy (13ish, I'd guess). Nice kid, but a bit of a baby seal. It didn't help that this mission played directly to my strengths. The traitors had an 18" deployment zone, and had to pick three terrain pieces inside that zone to be bunkers. All his vehicles had to be placed in reserves. My objectives were to destroy the bunkers and kill as much as possible... it was a bloodbath. I loaded my whole army on one flank, marched up, flamed the contents of the bunker, blew up the bunker, and moved on. Rinse, repeat. He dropped in an ironclad hoping to disrupt things but my own dreads turned and quickly took it down. My vanguard were the heroes of this mission, however. For the first time ever they survived a game, hopping from bunker to vehicle to bunker, using their melta bombs and thunder hammer to wreck house. By the end of the game they're accounted for a dread, a drop pod a bunker and a predator without losing a model. Not too shabby at all for a typically expendable unit.

Memorable Moments:
- Having my blood talon death company dread chase a weapon-destroyed rhino around the table for 4 turns. It was like a dog futilely chasing a car - too funny!
- Their Primarch showed up on turn 1, but since all my units were either vehicles or in transports he couldn't hurt me!

Game 6 - vs CSM
---------------
This last game against Brian was a meat grinder mission... literally. Any non-vehicle unit killed would be brought back on via reserves on the following turns. And a number of the objectives involved making use of this mechanic. The whole point was to throw yourself heedlessly into combat! No problem for death company....

Brian was playing a chaos marine list, with a couple 10man marine squads, a unit of lesser marines, havoks, raptors, and a large unit of berzerkers in a land raider. I pushed hard up the left side, and met a wall of enemy troops. The result was a massive scrum, with death company beating on berzerkers, marines, raptors and (on turn 2) a Primarch. By turn 4, most of his infantry units had died and come back. Meanwhile, my two small DC units were down to a single man each that simply refused to die and my large unit was still at half strength. My vanguard came in and killed one marine unit's transport - but rather than being slaughtered on the following turn (as is typical), they got locked into combat with a lesser daemon unit and lasted 5 combat rounds. When Brian's berzerkers respawned on turn 4, they mounted up into the land raider and rushed towards my left-side push... only to be surrounded by my death company, blocking all of his exits and trapping the berzerkers inside. His attempt to back away resulted in my death or glory thunder hammer immobilizing his land raider in place. He couldn't get away... and my death company couldn't stop attacking the vehicle they couldn't hurt. And that's the way the game ended! Victory for me, with more objective points and way more kill points.

Memorable Moments:
- The traitors were at desperation level 4 during this game, and so ran out of heavy weapon ammo when a to-hit roll was a 1. This knocked half of Brian's havoks out on turn 1, the rest on turn 2. They spent the rest of the game climbing down from their perch trying to kill themselves in combat so they could respawn with ammo. :D
- Brian's respawned raptors moving calmly behind my DC dreads, shooting each in the back with meltas while they futilely beat on the land raider's hull.

Wrap-Up
-------
At the end of the day, the traitors won (boo!). With a kill point total of 869 to 844 over 120+ games, that's an amazingly close result. Personally, I ended up about 11th of 42, which is plenty decent for me. I also managed to win Best Sportsman! (I had them fooled!)

This tournament was a crazy amount of fun. The missions were great, the armies looked fantastic, and the players were really into it. I'm really looking forward to the next one!

... And I've since purchased my first box of death company. They performed so obscenely well that they've earned a permanent place in my Blood Angels army!
As I think I've mentioned, it's tournament season here, and there's no way I'd be able to get this lovely Khorne army together in time. However, adding the odd unit to my other army is gradually growing into adding multiple units. In an effort to keep this blog from getting stale (and to keep me in practice), I'm going to start posting up pics and work in progress here. Don't worry, tho - after the tournament at the end of March, I'll be getting back to my regularly scheduled Khorne-ishness. :DGaoramonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10055796028837517322noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3827977154428959089.post-88048265895715796702011-02-19T19:42:00.000-07:002011-02-19T19:42:28.417-07:00Ask And Ye Shall Receive...No sooner had a put the last post up then a messenger came to my door with a box of Rhinos - 5 in all. Sweet! Now I've just got a ton of non-Khorne painting to get done and I can get back to my assembly.

BTW, any thoughts on the Rhino spikey bits? I'm considering not using them. I mean, I know that Chaos in 40K is very spikey, but it just looks to me like a partial fence running along the top of the vehicle.Gaoramonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10055796028837517322noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3827977154428959089.post-63282508313401493032011-02-17T08:32:00.000-07:002011-02-17T08:32:31.566-07:00Slow ProgressNot a lot to report lately. I've been side-tracked - it's tournament season, so I've been busy painting up new parts/models for my existing space marine army. I have received most of the orders I've placed, I'm now just waiting for the stack of Rhinos to arrive.

More updates when they happen.Gaoramonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10055796028837517322noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3827977154428959089.post-63294767428465173702011-01-30T16:11:00.000-07:002011-01-30T16:11:32.186-07:00Grey Hunter Pack Gamma

More construction. I slowed down the last week or so, as I was pretty sick. There are a bunch of painting and converting tasks I'm going to have to do for my regular Marine army for an upcoming tournament, so there'll impact the timeline a little as well.

I've placed an order for the remaining units from Forgeworld. I can't wait to see the Slaughterer in person! That model was really the inspiration to do this whole army. I've also got a GW order on the way for some vehicle bitz to go on my Rhinos, which should hopefully be ordered next week. Hopefully I can have all of the orders in by the end of Feb so that I can have the whole army put together (and ready for playtesting/painting) by the end of March.
The Wolf Guard are basically done, although I'd like to add a little more bling to their models. Pictures will be posted soon. I've had to take a break for a couple of days tho as I badly gashed my thumb - I suppose that it's only fitting that my own blood is the first collected for the Blood God. :)

I've also just realized that I didn't clean off the resin bits I got from Forgeworld, which means that the paint may not stick well. Most of the bits are on magentized arms, so I can just soak those easily enough. I'll have to basically soak the whole upper body of my Thunderwolf Cav, tho, to get their heads and torsos. D'oh! I'll get that underway today, and start soaking all of the unused bits so that they're ready to go.

I think I've found a way to use spikey bitz. Chaos marines have a ton of them, but they make models tougher to pack around and have a tendency to break. I'm going to experiment with embedding them in the bases of my Wolf Guard and Thunderwolf Cav models to theme things up. That shouldn't affect their pack-ability, but will give the models that much more visual appeal.Gaoramonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10055796028837517322noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3827977154428959089.post-8377546334877594482011-01-11T21:38:00.000-07:002011-01-11T21:38:25.131-07:00Grey Hunter Pack AlphaOne unit done!

One thing I didn't really appreciate when I designed this list was just how distinct each model in this unit was going to be. There's only two basic joe's in the squad - the rest have some sort of wargear. And all of the special gear is magnetized, in case I need to reconfigure the squad later. I'm glad I got it sorted before I started gluing arms on. :)

I'm getting a fair bit of glare off the lights in these pics... I'll have to try to experiment with making the lighting more indirect to remove that in the future.
For those who don't remember, my original list was this:

Wolf Lord (Runic Armour; Wolf Tail Talisman; Wolftooth Necklace; Thunderwolf Mount; Frost Weapon; Storm Shield; Rending in CC only; Saga of the Warrior Born)
Wolf Priest (Melta Bombs; Wolftooth Necklace)
Lone Wolf (Mark of the Wulfen; Storm Shield; Thunder Hammer)
15 Blood Claws Pack (Meltagun x2; Power Fist)
15 Blood Claws Pack (Meltagun x2; Power Fist)
10-Man Grey Hunters Pack (Mark of the Wulfen; Wolf Standard; Meltagun; Power Fist; Rhino)
10-Man Grey Hunters Pack (Mark of the Wulfen; Wolf Standard; Meltagun; Power Fist; Rhino)
3-Man Wolf Guard Pack (Power Weapon x3)
1-Man Thunderwolf Cavalry (Storm Shield; Frost Weapon)
1-Man Thunderwolf Cavalry (Storm Shield; Frost Weapon)
1-Man Thunderwolf Cavalry (Storm Shield; Frost Weapon)
5-Man Wolf Scouts (Mark of the Wulfen; Melta Bombs; Power Weapon x2; Meltagun)

This list has a lot going for it. However, as I went over the list I gradually became less and less impressed with the Blood Claws. Sure, they're a big scary mob of guys, but:
- they're only WS3 so they'll waste a lot of attacks
- they're on foot so they're slow, and
- they really need a wolf screen to increase their survivability on the long march in.
I tried to trim out some fat in order to cram a unit of Fenrisian wolves in, but I was never that pleased with the results. I'd have to cut one of the Thunderwolf Cav units (which are going to be the centerpieces of my army) in order to free up a Fast Attack slot for what was essentially a meat shield. So, it became pretty clear that the Blood Claws should go and be replaced by Grey Hunters.

At around the same I discovered (via the excellent Space Wolves blog) that Wolf Guard powerfist upgrades are cheaper than the Grey Hunter versions, so some swapping of loadouts was in order. And since I've got the hood up already, I might as well look into keeping the troop units to Khorne's number (8), for no other reason than it's fluffy. Why not!

After much tweaking, here's the new target list:

Wolf Lord (Melta Bombs; Runic Armour; Wolf Tail Talisman; Thunderwolf Mount; Frost Weapon; Storm Shield; Rending in CC only; Saga of the Warrior Born)
Lone Wolf (Mark of the Wulfen; Storm Shield; Thunder Hammer)
5-Man Wolf Guards (Melta Bombs; Combi-Meltagun x5; Power Fist x5)
7-Man Grey Hunters (Wolf Standard; Meltagun; Power Weapon Mark of the Wulfen, Rhino)
7-Man Grey Hunters (Wolf Standard; Meltagun; Power Weapon Mark of the Wulfen, Rhino)
7-Man Grey Hunters (Wolf Standard; Meltagun; Power Weapon Mark of the Wulfen, Rhino)
7-Man Grey Hunters (Wolf Standard; Meltagun; Power Weapon Mark of the Wulfen, Rhino)
7-Man Grey Hunters (Wolf Standard; Meltagun; Power Weapon Mark of the Wulfen, Rhino)
1-Man Thunderwolf Cavalry (Storm Shield; Frost Weapon)
1-Man Thunderwolf Cavalry (Storm Shield; Frost Weapon)
1-Man Thunderwolf Cavalry (Storm Shield; Frost Weapon)
5-Man Wolf Scouts (Mark of the Wulfen; Melta Bombs; Power Weapon x2; Meltagun)

With this list, I get
- 8-man Grey Hunter squads, when you add the Wolf Guard to each unit. Fluffy!
- powerfists on the Wolf Guard and power weapons in the Grey Hunters. More points-efficient for the same loadout.
- plasma pistols for the Grey Hunters. Not cheap but very characterful and cool looking

The only part of the list I'm still unsure of is the Lone Wolf. He's a complete beat-stick, and my opponents'll be hesitant to take him out as he'll give me a victory point. However, he can't deep strike so he's going to have to footslog his way across the map making him the slowest part of my army by far. And with terminator armour, I can't even pop him into a Rhino to hurry him along. I'll have to try him out for a couple of games and see whether or not he fits in with this list.

[edited to remove plasma pistols from Grey Hunters, because I apparently can't count >.<]Gaoramonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10055796028837517322noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3827977154428959089.post-9579262063654787192011-01-09T19:12:00.000-07:002011-01-09T19:12:05.524-07:00Construction UnderwayNow that all of the orders have finally arrived, I've started gotten construction fully underway! I taken over a good part of the living room in the process. :)

I'm slowly seperating out the bits and pieces of Berzerker and Chaos Warrior bitz and distributing them around to the various squads-to-be. There should be enough variety to keep each unit distinct, but with enough common parts to keep them contected in theme.

I got the Possessed squad built - they're going to be the marines with Mark of the Wolfen. The original plan was to take some parts (like the arms, etc) and use the basic marine bodies, but they models look so good I couldn't resist. Here are a couple of pics.

As you can see, I also got my photo cube assembled. The pics look a lot better with the right lighting. Here are my Thunderwolf Cav again, with shots taken from the booth.

Now that the Christmas busy-ness is starting to ebb it's finally construction time! I was unfortunately not able to get the bulk of my bitz before the holidays (which is going to limit what I can build), so I've had to make do with the parts I have.

First up is the Thunderwolf Cav. They're constructed with:
- a bloodcrusher mount
- the running legs from a berzerker (to give a good seated stance on the back)
- the head and torso from Forgeworld's World Eater upgrade
- weapon and shield from Warhammer Chaos Knights.

The arms are both magnetized to give me some flexibility in load-out, but my default right now is frost weapon and storm shield.

Here're some shots from the first model off the assembly line.

So far, so good, I think! I still need to get the shoulder pads in place, but you can get the feel for how the model is going to look. I'm putting a lot of the more detailed and crazy bitz onto these models, so they should look fantastic once completed.

Construction of the remaining cav should continue tomorrow.
- 2 units of Berzerkers
- 1 unit of Chaos Space Marines
- 1 unit of Possessed Marines

I was fortunate enough to find a Canadian reseller (www.miniwargaming.com), which saved me 20% as well as prevented any potential customs issues at the border.

This (along with the order I placed with Dragon Forge for the remainder of my bases) should give me everything I need to get all of my troop units built! Hopefully they get here soon. Unfortunately, as real life is starting to get crazy with the run up to Christmas I probably won't be able to get much done until the holidays - check back after Christmas for some updates with WIP pics.Gaoramonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10055796028837517322noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3827977154428959089.post-6957419117083097882010-11-08T11:16:00.002-07:002010-11-08T11:16:51.548-07:00Forgeworld goodies in my hands!Holy crap, that's the fastest shipment I've ever had from Forgeworld - arrived in about 10 days. Crazy! I wasn't expecting anything for at least a month.

Oh, and the bitz inside? So sweet.... can't wait to start assembly. :)Gaoramonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10055796028837517322noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3827977154428959089.post-79994537828668931512010-11-03T10:40:00.000-06:002010-11-03T10:40:33.133-06:00The Bitz Are In The Mail...Initial orders have gone out to The War Store and Forgeworld for parts, and I've already received my initial order of bases from Dragon Forge. It'll probably only take a week for the War Store bitz to come in, but Forgeworld will likely not arrive until the end of the month (at the earliest). That said, once the orders arrive I'll have everything I need to start construction!
I've got some painting to do on my existing Space Marine army in the meantime, specifically my Blood Angels Honour Guard squad. Stay tuned for some pics.Gaoramonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10055796028837517322noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3827977154428959089.post-28313950887352282612010-10-29T13:30:00.000-06:002010-10-29T13:30:26.685-06:00The Cost of the ArmyTime to count pennies.

When I start to collect any army, I like to have an idea of how much it's going to cost to get to the point total I want. This is my hobby after all, if shouldn't bankrupt me. :) If it's too much, I can either tweak the armylist to remove the more expensive choices (which I can bring in later once the initial army is built), or lower my expectations of how fast I can pull it together.

This army is resonably expensive as I'm going the extra mile to bring in conversion bitz from Forgeworld and The War Store to give the army that extra bit of bling. I've tried to limit the cost somewhat by keeping the number of transports to a minimum.

Here's the break down of all the boxes and bitz I'm going to need, and where they're going to be sourced.
There'll be a little bit extra in there for shipping fees, and I might be able to trim some off the top by using an online retailer for the GW boxes, but this is the initial estimate. Like I said, fairly expensive... but I think the extra cost will be worth it for their amazing look!

Based on a budget of about $100/month, it'll take me about 8 months to get all the components of the army assembled. If I'm smart about the way I order everything, I should be able to start construction and painting early on and have the army constructed (if not completely painted) shortly thereafter. So... that means I should have all the parts by the end of June, and have the army painted in time for the fall tournament season next year.

Time to start purchasing!Gaoramonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10055796028837517322noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3827977154428959089.post-76651803838232961032010-10-20T08:44:00.002-06:002010-10-20T08:44:49.496-06:00Target Army ListI've been doing a lot of futzing in Army Builder recently in an attempt to come up with a fun, characterful and yet competative army list. A tall order, I know! My self-imposed limit on long range weapons is going to hurt the competitive side of this army, but I've tried to compensate by making the units I do take as nasty as possible.

After many revisions, here's the 2000pt list I've settled on:

Wolf Lord (Runic Armour; Wolf Tail Talisman; Wolftooth Necklace; Thunderwolf Mount; Frost Weapon; Storm Shield; Rending in CC only; Saga of the Warrior Born)
Wolf Priest (Melta Bombs; Wolftooth Necklace)
Lone Wolf (Mark of the Wulfen; Storm Shield; Thunder Hammer)
15 Blood Claws Pack (Meltagun x2; Power Fist)
15 Blood Claws Pack (Meltagun x2; Power Fist)
10-Man Grey Hunters Pack (Mark of the Wulfen; Wolf Standard; Meltagun; Power Fist; Rhino)
10-Man Grey Hunters Pack (Mark of the Wulfen; Wolf Standard; Meltagun; Power Fist; Rhino)
3-Man Wolf Guard Pack (Power Weapon x3)
1-Man Thunderwolf Cavalry (Storm Shield; Frost Weapon)
1-Man Thunderwolf Cavalry (Storm Shield; Frost Weapon)
1-Man Thunderwolf Cavalry (Storm Shield; Frost Weapon)
5-Man Wolf Scouts (Mark of the Wulfen; Melta Bombs; Power Weapon x2; Meltagun)

I'm planning to run this army a little like Tyranids - freak people out with the crazy large monsters so they leave the foot troops alone until it is too late. All of my solo scary guys have storm shields, which will really help them weather the initial rounds of shooting. They also have high-strength weapons which should make them a threat to anything (vehicles and monsterous creatures included).

The game plan:
- The wolf guard will get assigned to the grey hunters and the wolf scouts
- The blood claws on foot will likely move up together, with one unit stretched out to provide cover for the other. The front unit will initially have the wolf priest attached so that it won't break and run (and thus expose the unit behind). Once they get close to the enemy, the priest will switch to the larger rear unit for the assault.
- The grey hunters will move around to take objectives and provide mobile LOS blocking for my big guys (if neccessary)
- The wolf scounts will (hopefully) come in from the far table edge to supress any firing bases/artillery
- The big guys will walk into the teeth of the enemy and pound them into submission!
A simple plan for now, but these guys are devoted to Khorne, after all. :)

There are plenty of alternatives that I've been considering, and I may experiment with them after I've had a couple of games to get familiar with how this list plays. One simplest modification would be to swap out one unit of blood claws for a land raider crusader to transport the remaining unit of blood claws and the wolf priest. While it would drop my model count significantly, it might be worth it to improve the survivability and time-to-target for the blood claws. A big change would be to replace the blood claws with a large squad (or two) of wolf guard to really bring the close combat pain.Gaoramonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10055796028837517322noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3827977154428959089.post-58156953831833028292010-10-08T07:48:00.000-06:002010-10-08T07:48:22.662-06:00Bitz BudgetingI've been busy generating a lot of armylists the last little while - I'm having a hard time nailing down exactly how I think a Khorne army should be constructed. I've also never run an infantry-heavy marine list, so there's a lot of uncertainty there as far as what would actually be effective. The problem with this list-flux is that I'm trying to get an estimated budget in place for the final armylist, and each change to the list (especially the unit upgrades) changes the shopping list. Bah.

Games Workshop does a pretty good job of supplying a range of weapon upgrades with its plastic kits, but it can get really irritating when they do not provide enough of a given upgrade. For example, meltaguns are very popular (and quite effective) right now, but they often come only one to a box. If you want two per squad, you're either out of luck or have to hit eBay or the bitz sellers.

The bulk of my foot forces are going to be constructed from the Knorne Berzerker and Chaos Space Marine box sets. Unfortunately, the Berzerker kit does not have weapon upgrades of any kind. The Chaos Space Marine set has some upgrades, but only one each of meltagun, plasmagun, flamer, powerfist, power weapon and banner. I don't think any of the other box sets I'm getting will have anything appropriate, so I'll definitely be short what I need. The question is: how short?

Let's use my most recent (and rough) armylist as a starting point:
15-man Blood Claw, meltagun, flamer, powerfist
15-man Blood Claw, meltagun, flamer, powerfist
9-man Grey Hunter, meltagun, powerfist, wolf standard
9-man Grey Hunter, meltagun, powerfist, wolf standard
3-man Wolf Guard, 3xpower weapon
Thunderwolf Cav, frost blade, storm shield
Thunderwolf Cav, frost blade, storm shield
Thunderwolf Cav, frost blade, storm shield
Lone Wolf, thunder hammer, storm shield

Here's the list of bitz I'll need, based on the above. I'll assume, for now, that I'll be constructing the majority of this list from 3 boxes of Berzerkers and 2 boxes of CSM.

Meltagun: 5 (Blood Clawsx2, Grey Huntersx2, Wolf Scoutsx1)
- only 2 from the CSMs so 3 short
Flamer: 2 (Blood Clawsx2)
- 2 from the CSM so got enough
Power Fist: 4 (Blood Clawsx2, Grey Huntersx2)
- 2 from the CSM so 2 short
Power Weapons: 5 (Wolf Guardx3, Wolf Scoutsx2)
- 2 from the CSM so 3 short
Frost Weapons: 3 (Thuderwolf Cavalryx3)
- nothing spplicable, so 3 short
Storm Shield: 4 (Thunderwolf Cavalryx3, Lone Wolfx1)
- the current CSM range doesn't include storm shields so I don't have any of these
Thunder Hammer: 1 (Lone Wolfx1)
- nothing applicable in the box sets so 1 short
Wolf Standard: 2 (Grey Huntersx2)
- 2 from the CSM so got enough

A bit of a mixed bag, really - I've got enough for a couple of the items, but I'm definitely short on the rest. The War Store is my bitz supplier of choice, so let's see what they've got available that can fill in the blanks.

Meltagun:
- CSM Meltagun for $7.49US each. Ouch.
Power Fist:
- 2 Chaos Terminator Power Fists for $3.99US
Power Weapon:
- Chaos Knights Possessed Daemon Sword for $1.99US each
- Chaos Knights Champion Daemon Sword for $2.99US each
Frost Weapon:
- 3 Chaos Knights CCW Blades for $2.49US
Storm Shield:
- Chaos Knights Champion Shield for $.99US
- 5 Chaos Knights Shield With Arms for $5.99US
Thunder Hammer:
- Chaos Terminator Power Mace for $2.99US

Most of my needs can be filled in at fairly reasonable prices. The total cost for these extra bits comes in at $44US, more than half of which is for the meltaguns alone. For now I'll plan on ordering everything except for the meltaguns, and scour eBay and other bitz sellers for those for the next few months to see if I can swing a deal. For today's budgeting purposes, tho, at least I have an idea of where I stand.Gaoramonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10055796028837517322noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3827977154428959089.post-83231333748083402972010-10-05T10:59:00.000-06:002010-10-05T10:59:20.853-06:00Scouts: Do They Make The Cut?I've been torn as to whether or not to include wolf scouts in my list. First of all, there are no models for them, so anything I do will have to be converted up. Secondly, and perhaps most importantly, I've had a tough time justifying them thematically - are they Khorne-y (Khorne-ish? Khorne-esque?) enough?

I've hemmed and hawed the last couple of days over them, but I've finally decided to include them. I'm already going to be limiting this army a fair bit by so strictly limiting any long range firepower. To leave out scouts as well would remove the only sneaky option I have available. I mean, I want to keep this army fluffy, but I don't exactly want to allow all comers to walk over me either.

Thematic justifications aside, however, the thing that tipped the scales was that I found the base model for the unit: Forgeworld's Renegade Militia Enforcers. The look sort of like scouts, and they have a skull helmet that quite closely matches that worn by the berzerkers. I'll probably pick up the Renegade Weapon Arm set as well, so that I can get the poses and weapon load-out I want.

I'm glad that's sorted out... now I've got to figure out what my army list is going to look like.Gaoramonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10055796028837517322noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3827977154428959089.post-76570228932550854572010-10-03T14:59:00.001-06:002010-10-07T13:15:02.295-06:00Constructing the World EatersThe challenge for this army is creating something that looks distinctively like World Easters, but has a enough of a variety of models that it's not boring. The only real World Eater units that GW produces is the Khorne Berzerkers, and that's just not enough. The key is going to be bringing in as many bitz and pieces from other sources to make each unit type distintive and interesting.

Blood Claws
These units are going to use the easiest, as they'll be using the GW Berzerker models. They have very dynamic poses, which suits the nature of the unit. I might pick up some extra shoulder pads, as I don't intend to use decals and don't really care for shoulder pads that don't have any detail.

Grey Hunters
These models are going to use the standard Chaos Space Marine model as the base. The poses for these are much more solid and static, which again suits the temperment of a unit that has more control over their blood lust. However, I'll convert them up with the bitz from the Forgeworld World Eater Upgrade kit. These upgrades are fantastic, and will add a LOT of character to the models.

Mark of the Wolfen Models
I'm going to be taking models with Marks of the Wolfen as much as I can, simply because it really suits Khorne-y idea of rampaging marines! These models will be based around the Possessed marine models, and they're appropriately bulked up, don't wield the usual weapons and will really stand out from the other models in the unit.

Thunderwolf Cavalry
The conversion possibilities for these models are what really drew me to this whole army concept in the first place. These guys are going to be mounted on Bloodcrushers, and mounted by marines created from leftover bits from the Berzerker, Chaos Space Marine and World Eater Upgrade packs. I'm going to go over the top as much as possible here, to make these guys really distinctive and freaky-looking.

Lone Wolf Terminator
I've already decided that I'm going to have at least one Lone Wolf Terminator in the list, and that decision was forced on me by my discovery of the Lord Zhufor model from Forgeworld. He's amazing, and loaded with World Eater and Khorne icons as well! I'll use the demonic head, and have to convert up a different weapons load-out (as I'm intending to run him with storm shield and thunder hammer rather than the axe and powerfist he comes with), but the base model is just too good to pass up.

Wolf Lord in Thunder Wolf
This unit is going to require no conversion at all. The role of my Wolf Lord will be played by... a Blood Slaughterer model from Forgeworld. This model has everything I love about the Chaos: nasty looking, great details, and huge! It's going to make an exceptional centerpiece for the army, and I'm already itching to get him assembled and painted.

Bases
I have a confession to make: I hate bases. I just have no use for flock, and I think my attempts at using making bases myself have been dismal failures. So, I'll be purchasing some resin bases from Dragon Forge to use instead. I've used their bases before for my Space Marine army, and they really look fantastic. I'm leaning towards the Parched Earth set at the moment, but that may change. They're simple but would look good, and the range has all of the various sizes I'll need.

There are also going to be a number of miscellaneous bitz and pieces I'll need, so I'll likely be placing an order with The War Store at some point. I don't think I'll need much (eg extra meltaguns, powerfists, shields from Fantasy Chaos Knihts, etc), but I find it much easier to just place the order than try to scavenge off eBay or other gamers.

It'd be possible to pull this army together for a lot less work (and likely a lot less cost) by passing on these conversions, but this army is going to be primarily about getting the look and feel of the army right. I really want to be able to put this army on the table and have someone say 'holy crap, those guys are going to eat my soul!' It'll take time to save up the funds to get this stuff together, but it'll be worth it once it's ready to go!Gaoramonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10055796028837517322noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3827977154428959089.post-84917503061666386532010-10-01T14:19:00.000-06:002010-10-01T14:19:47.068-06:00Let's Talk About Unit OptionsWhen I imagine a Khorne army, I see a mass of blood-soaked madmen charging across the field and hurling themselves at the enemy. Barely any shooting in sight apart from the traditional bolt pistols. More organized and tactical than orcs, but not exactly subtle! So, what units in the Space Wolves codex seems to fit?

Fortunately for me, both troops selections make sense. Blood Claws represent the more rash/blood-lusty marines, charging headlong at the enemy: extra bonuses on the change, the headstrong rule to drive them into combat. Grey Hunters represent the more calculating marines: using tactical advantages to reap the most skulls.

Some of the elite troops work as well. Wolf Guard fit well, allowing me to put very killy Champions of Khorne in other units. A Lone Wolf could be a rabid marine (or even lesser demon) who doesn't even care if he dies so long as he takes lots of enemies with him. Wolf Scouts? Maybe. Another more tactical unit, we'll see if I can justify it fluff-wise.

Thunderwolf Cav is it, as far as fast attack is concerned. Highly specialized, highly customized, highly killy monsters - what's not to love?

Unfortunately, heavy support is a wash... all of the units are fire support rather than close combat oriented. Ah, well.

There are plenty of HQ options, but I'm going to pass on all of the named characters - I'd rather construct my own. Of the non-named options, I think the Wolf Lord and Wolf Priest will fit the bill. One will be the tooled-up unstoppable killing machine, while the other will be an exalted Chamption of Khorne who whips his followers into a mindless frenzy! Sweet. :)Gaoramonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10055796028837517322noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3827977154428959089.post-21781887668154513632010-10-01T08:08:00.000-06:002010-10-01T08:08:18.469-06:00...And So It BeginsWell, look where my hobby activites have finally brought me - creating a hobby-centric blog, just one more voice desperate for the approval of the masses. :)

I'll be using this space to track the progress of my new 40K army. I'll talk about the list I intend to use, how the build is going, paint schemes, etc. I'll post updates whenever progress is made, no matter how often (or rarely). And, eventually, I'll do some battle reports and discuss options as the army is tuned for more competitive play.

And what is this mystery army, you ask? World Eaters. :)

I got into 40K as a regular hobby about 18 months ago, playing vanilla Marines. And the more I played, the more I was dissatisfied with the troop options. Let's face it, tac marines are a joke - they're priced like specialists, but are the ultimate generalist (which means they fail at everything). I got tired of being slapped around in hand-to-hand by every army out there so I jumped ship at the first opportunity and started to run the army as Blood Angels. That army suited me much better, but it still tended to be very shooty for a supposed close combat specialist army. Finally, I just decided to embrace the marine beat-stick and do a full-on Khorne army!

The Chaos Space Marine codex itself really doesn't interest me. Khorne is really just one of the flavours, and since I'm not particularly interested in running a lot of demons or shooty units there just wasn't enough choice to satisfy. Instead, I'll be running this army as a counts-as Space Wolf army. Now the basic Space Wolf troops aren't perhaps as nasty as CSM berzerkers, but they're plenty assaulty. The army also very flexible and has a lot of variety, which means lots of opportunity for me to convert stuff up and, later on, tune it for effectiveness.

So there you have it - my statement of intent for this blog. Hopefully this whets your appetite enough for you to check back as things develop. Enjoy!Gaoramonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10055796028837517322noreply@blogger.com0
